On Tue., April 3, the Board of San Francisco’s Municipal Transportation Agency will discuss extending the hours of parking-meter operation to evenings and Sundays in commercial districts when demand dictates.

The Sierra Club supports this proposal. The longer meter hours will raise revenues for Muni, and they will also create parking turnover for evening and Sunday businesses. In time we expect that the city will price all meters to the market and will allow more time for business patrons. Then drivers will spend less time cruising for parking, leading to less congestion. Muni will then face less congestion, and drivers will emit a smaller amount of greenhouse-gases.
